Troy's passion for finding and creating the best moonshine has led her to a new creation just in time for Valentine's Day . .

Troy & Sons Small Batch Moonshine Chocolates
"Made by a team comprised of an agronomist/foodie turned master chocolate maker, and an NIH scientist that has produced the world's finest ganaches inspired by recipes from Francois Payard and Pierre Hermé and who has hosted dinner parties at the French Embassy in D.C."

Since these chocolates are hand-made, there is a very limited supply which we are offering exclusively to dedicated Troy & Sons Moonshine friends for Valentine's Day.

UPDATE: Our Moonshine chocolates were a hit! Our Valentine's limited edition chocolates are all gone. Please contact us directly to find out when our next offering for our specialty Moonshine truffles will be available!

Olivia Newton John, John Easterling, Kimberly, and Kingsley kept us smiling today over a taste of moonshine. This is the second time we've gotten to meet Olivia. The first was at the Noel Awards in California when our son Marshall wrote the invocation honoring Audrey Hepburn and Rosa Parks. She's even more lovely now. Years seem to improve us if we let them.

At M1NT a hip club in Shanghai, Chinese media and distributors got a chance to taste their first American moonshine. Surprisingly they liked our smooth moonshine even more than the aged spirits. Perhaps it was the spirits, but we found the Chinese to be happy and fun loving. By the end of the night Troy had lost her voice from talking too much.

Have you checked out our recipes page lately? We've been adding handcrafted cocktail recipes developed here at the distillery and at some of the area's best restaurants and bars! Here are two of the latest additions, sent to us by Katie Button.

Troy & Sons Horchata Moon cocktail recipe

This cocktail reminds us of a holiday eggnog, but much lighter. The balance of the fruitiness of the moonshine with all the nuttiness of the horchata made from chufas (tigernuts) is really great.

Troy & Sons Eclipse de Luna cocktail recipe

The name Eclipse de Luna is the Spanish translation of lunar eclipse, a nod to the Spanish sherry and Katie's Spanish tapas bar. We like the name because of the play on moon from "moonshine" and also the look of the orange wheel in the golden colored drink, like it is glowing.

Asheville Citizen-Times

Alright! Troy & Sons is on the front page of the Asheville Citizen-Times! The article talks about our first shipments to local ABC stores and our inspiring connection to local choreographer Ann Dunn:

Troy & Sons Moonshine prompted veteran Asheville choreographer Ann Dunn to create a spirited dancework called "Moonshine," which will be performed at the company's season-opening concert Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Diana Wortham Theatre.

The ballet "is not about liquor," but she was inspired by both "the name of the product and the effect that the moon in the sky has on the spirit," Dunn said. "I consider what Troy has done as creating liquid art."

Mountain Xpress Magazine logo

Troy & Sons is featured on Asheville's own Mountain Xpress magazine!

Troy and Sons, a legit, licensed and local moonshine distillery, is "all heart," says Troy Ball, mother of three and white whiskey (aka moonshine) maker. With her all-American-girl looks and soft smile, there's nothing about this former Texan that hints at liquor distiller, let alone moonshine maker.

Here are some excerpts from tasting notes from the American Distilling Institute's Craft Spirits Judging in April:

Palate: "Chocolate, fruit, malt and oak"
Nose: "Vanilla, wine, fruit intrigued..."
and the comment that floored and delighted us: "Best I could ask for with corn whiskey..."

Looks like we're doing something right!

Verve Magazine Cover, June 2011

Thanks to Melanie McGee Bianchi for a wonderful piece about Troy & Sons in Verve Magazine!

When Ball combed the coves herself a few years back, developing relationships with WNC farmers in search of authentic corn-liquor recipes, she didn't stop until she discovered the McEntire family in McDowell county, purveyors of Crooked Creek corn. Their corn is a rare breed that's been trademarked for its particular taste and purity. Ball partnered up with the McEntires to make what she says is an especially smooth liquor with hints of vanilla. In late May, she started running batches of a fermented mash through a giant 2,000-liter copper still, manufactured in Germany and shipped in to Asheville.

I'm distilling this morning and I have to say the distillery smells incredible! The back door is open and I can hear the tractor finishing the last planting of Crooked Creek Corn for this year. The spirits produced today will be redistilled and put on oak for our new product which will be released this fall. The day couldn't be better. We have begun putting spirits in Oak Barrels for the future release of our aged whiskey. It's amazing how quickly the spirits change once they make contact with oak. ~ TROY BALL

Tomorrow we are delivering our Crooked Creek Seed Corn to one of our growers. He will be planting on Saturday in the central part of the state and our local Crooked Creek Corn Crop will be planted next week. Very exciting time!

Our first official tasting took place last night in Greensboro with the North Carolina ABC Commission. Our moonshine was truly appreciated by this group of very knowledgeable spirits vendors. Over and over we heard "this is so smooth," and "this is the way moonshine is supposed to be." Clarence, from Eastern North Carolina said this is what we call "Good Boot!"

This mini display rack is made of wormy Red Oak and will be the model for racks that will be in the NC ABC stores. Benny Flynn and I had a great time designing, building and then staining our hand made model. That stain did a number on my hands!

March 4, 2011

Take a moment to watch a WLOS ABC 13 news segment about Troy & Sons (link temporarily down). "Mountain moonshine has upgraded from a mason jar to a liquor bottle. Troy & Sons will be Western North Carolina's first craft distillery, selling a smooth version of moonshine in small batches. There will be a tasting room next to Highland Brewing in Asheville. The goal is to change the image of this southern white whiskey."
