We were very excited and honored to hear from our friends at the Blackbird Restaurant in downtown Asheville. BBQ is always serious business in the South and the arrival of a new smoker got the creative juices flowing. The chefs are determined to make new converts and their new menu hit the tables July 29th. Tender meat and some great new sauces - check out the Troy & Sons Moonshine Madness, and be sure to leave room for the sides - jalapeno cheese corn bread and pimento mac and cheese. Save room for peach pie or their famous coconut cake - and may we suggest our Troy & Sons Oak Reserve to round out the meal? Then perhaps a nap!
I have to say I was a bit taken aback when I saw the bacon fat floating in the bottles of my sweet, pure Platinum moonshine. I'd stopped by the Orange Peel music club and manager Justin Ferraby took me down to Pulp, the private liquor club there, to show me his latest concept. I admit I was a bit reluctant when he asked me to take a sniff, but very glad I did. Who knew? Justin has a no holds barred approach when coming up with cocktails and I shouldn't have been surprised when he came up with another winner. He premiered his new "Eve" at the Asheville Food Festival's Elixer event and we saw a lot of tentative sips turn into wide smiles and exclamations of "wow, this is really good".
We were also pleased to see that a number of entries at the Festival included our product. Made with our very own Blonde, one of the prettiest drinks belonged to Brian and Jolene of 151 Boutique and Bistro with their "Autumn in Asheville" - and yes it was.
Home and lifestyle icon Martha Stewart is holding her American Made Audience Choice Awards and Troy & Sons is a nominee. We feel it's time for moonshine to have it's moment in the, um, sun, and need your help and your votes. To Vote

Thanks for your support,
Summer in the South and it's hot. We are definitely in the dog days of summer, which I always thought meant it was so hot that only the dogs were running around outside. Although if I think about it, even the dogs seemed to have enough sense to find the shadiest place on the porch to rest until the evening cool. Turns out the name comes from Sirius, the Dog Star, and the The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional period of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3rd and ending August 11th, coinciding with the ancient rising of the Dog Star.
Hopefully that fun fact took your mind off the fact that humidity is 82 and it's not raining. Here in the South, we have hot and humid - great if you're a hothouse flower, and I think a lot of Southern culture developed as a way to beat the heat. Deep verandas and the regular invitations to "sit down and rest a spell", typically accompanied by a cool libation, are the sensible response to a steamy afternoon! Growing up, our sons always loved milkshakes, and holding a frosty glass and enjoying the welcomingly frozen goodness is one of the enduring memories of our family summers. We came up with an adult version that our friends have loved - dessert and after-dinner drink in one! We hope you enjoy it as well.
Moonshine Milkshake: 2 oz T&S Platinum Moonshine, 1/2 oz Godiva Caramel Chocolate liqueur, 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, dash of sea salt. Blend, pour into a frosted glass, grab a spoon and a straw and savor.
We're expecting a bumper crop at Crooked Creek Farms! The corn is tasseling and John McEntire, whose family has farmed there for generations, is looking forward to our harvest in November. You can see some of our beautiful mountains in the background in this short video - and you can understand why his family chose to settle on this land. From John's farm to our still to your glass - craft spirits at their best.
July 10"Corn From A Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains"
There is a fantastic new book out detailing the history of Moonshine in the Smokies, and we're lucky enough to be mentioned in one of the sections! The following announcement was released from Great Smoky Mountains Association on June 24, 2013:
Moonshine: A word that paints a thousand pictures. In fact, according to author and University of North Carolina at Asheville history professor Dan Pierce, life in the Smoky Mountain region for many often brings to mind a vivid image of the lowly moonshiner holding his XXX-labeled stoneware jug, passed out beside his cooper pot still.
"My hope is to humanize the moonshiner," Pierce said of his latest work, "Corn From a Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains."
"It's important to understand this regional phenomenon as the product not only of individual choices, but also of deep-seated cultural, economic and social conditions that created a complex and shifting historical context in which the moonshiners plied their trade," Pierce said.
"Corn from a Jar" traces the history of moonshine back to its Scots-Irish ancestry, where "whisky production and drinking were integral parts of social, economic, and political life" well before settlers crossed the Atlantic. When they arrived in the New World in as early as 1620, they began to distill the local crop, maize or Indian corn, Pierce writes.
You can purchase the book online at the Great Smoky Mountain Association's Online Store.
The 4th of July is a great holiday - celebrating our country and spending time with family and friends. Politics has become increasingly less civil and if you read a newspaper or watch the news, you would think we are an increasingly divided country. And in many ways we are. But in the ways that matter the most, we are united as Americans. When tornadoes hit Moore,Oklahoma and terrorists struck in Boston, our first response was "what can we do to help?" When disaster strikes, we are all family. We pull together, we mourn together and we rebuild together. And on this very special holiday, we celebrate together.
I am so proud to be a citizen of this great country and wish you all a most fabulous 4th!
Please note that we will NOT be open for tours on Thursday, July 4. We WILL be open Friday and Saturday, so please plan to join us on those evenings and enjoy a safe 4th of July with your families!

When we were at South by Southwest SXSW in Austin earlier this year, I met Steven Easley, an entertainment lawyer who has represented music greats like REM and works with the Buddy Holly Estate. Steven is involved with the University Club in Washington, DC, and invited me to be part of their kick-off for the Club's summer programming. The University Club is an historic organization whose members are brought together by their shared interest in intellectual, athletic and cultural pursuits. For over a century, the University Club has provided a place for members to gather and an opportunity to take part in civic and community projects.
The Club was beautiful, the people I met were interesting, and I was also fortunate to spend some time with JP Caceres of Del Campo, who had been brought in by the University Club for the event. One of D.C's finest mixologists, JP is not only gifted behind the bar, but one of the nicest and friendliest people you could hope to meet. The Huffington Post says this about him, "JP Caceres is no ordinary bartender . . . (he) strives to evoke a bygone, classier era, and remind revelers that they're living in what he calls the "Modern Golden Age of Cocktails". And what a wonderful age it is. Charlie and I feel we've gotten pretty good at mixing cocktails, but then we see a master at work, and know how much there is to learn.
We sent JP our various Troy & Sons craft spirits and by the day of the event, he had come up with some incredible concoctions. I shared my story with the attendees and JP worked his blending magic. Based on my experience, you can make a LOT of friends when they have a beautiful cocktail in their hands!

Wings, wings, and more wings! It's definitely that time of the year where folks are lighting up the grills, throwing on their favorite foods, and grabbing an icy beverage just dripping with condensation from the summer heat. Over the weekend, we were at the The Big Kahuna Wing Festival, which was a HUGE success with 5,000 people and over 60,000 lbs of wings served. Thanks BKW Spices and Aubrey's for your help and KNOXVILLE for coming out! Click here to see our photo album from the festival!
All of that came just shortly after another BBQ event -- one that is close to our hearts: The 7th Annual Big BBQ Bash in Maryville, TN, which benefits the Helen Ross Mcnabb Center. Click here to see our photos from the event.

We were thrilled to join Coach Krzyzewski (now you know why he's generally referred to as Coach K) to raise money for the Emily K Center in Durham, NC. Named in honor of Coach K's mom, the center inspires and supports academically-focused low-income students to help them do well in school, attend college, and break the cycle of poverty in their families. The Kindergarten to College model ensures that students have a structured program and caring people who are committed to their success. In addition, thousands of children take advantage of the camps and sports facilities at the Emily K Center each year, providing opportunities for exercise, team-building and creative expression in a safe environment. At the Emily K Center, every child is encouraged to 'Think Big'.
Troy & Sons was the featured spirit at the event and our talented bartenders were Shannon Healy, owner of Alley 26 in Durham, who was just voted Durham's best bartender, and fellow Alley 26 bartender, Scott Ritchie. The most popular drink of the event was 'One Platinum Moment', featuring our Troy & Sons Platinum, lime juice, simple syrup, mint and cucumber. Of course the real star of the show was the famous Coach K, and our son Luke was especially excited to be part of our T&S team. We here at Troy & Sons know how much it means to have people behind you, encouraging you to 'Think Big'. Thank you Coach K and those who staff and fund the Emily K Center - and to kids of all ages - Think Big!

Asheville's beautiful Biltmore Estate was the most recent site of engage!, an event which brings together leaders and innovators from the luxury wedding industry. 250 people came to learn from, collaborate with, and inspire each other.
Planners, designers, photographers, artists, entertainment and media professionals gathered and Troy & Sons was featured at an evening's event at the Biltmore's Antler Hill Barn. Considering the very discriminating crowd, we came up with something a little different. Guests chose two from a menu of descriptive terms, and our very talented bartenders, Justin Ferraby, who helps manage the Orange Peel music club in Asheville, NC and Ian Murray, from Manna Restaurant in Wilmington, NC, crafted each drink to order. With no set drink menu, our mixologists stocked the bar with everything imaginable, including enough fruit to start our own roadside stand.
Ian Murray, was named North Carolina's Best Bartender by the NC Bartender's Guild, and Justin Ferraby, who has worked a number of our events and is definitely a crowd favorite, performed their usual magic behind the bar. Justin had this to say, "this event was a lot of fun. I enjoy working with T&S spirits because while they have a distinct flavor, they're really easy to mix. As always, the T&S booth was popular and Ian and I were pretty much non-stop. We had free rein to create the drinks and took advantage of the freedom to try a few things and have a good time. The only downside was that after mixing over 100 specialized drinks, we'd have people coming up wanting us to make another of the drink they'd ordered earlier. The good news is that they loved our creations; the bad news is that we had no idea what we'd put together. Luckily the guests were happy to try something new and it was great way to introduce people to the spirits."
Mary Rich Hill, one of our amazing T&S folks, headed up our team and was out at Biltmore making sure everything ran well. Check out the photo of Mary with just two of the impressive attendees, Josh Friedman, owner of Elan Artists, (there's an accent on the E of Elan but no clue how to put one there) and his business partner, Daniel Lichty. Mary is holding a bottle of our newest spirit, Blonde, and I would like to state that we do not require employees to actually be blonde, although we do not discriminate against them!

The WhiskeyReviewer.com gave a great review of Troy & Sons Platinum this month!
Smooth is the operative word when talking about the Platinum. It comes at you with a light, oily mouth feel that doesn't burn as much as tingle, with a light sweet taste of corn and cereal throughout. It is refreshing when sampled with a little ice but as I mentioned it steps it up a notch when it plays with others in the form of a cocktail.

"I'm a really big fan of Troy & Sons," says Dan Latimer, Husk's general manager. "The flavors in there and the nuances in that moonshine are really awesome to me, and I think that [Ball's] ability to really showcase the ingredient that goes into the whiskey is just beautiful, this strong cereal flavor that comes through."

This week we'd like to shine a light on our friends at Disney's Wilderness Lodge at Disney World in Florida. They are serving two very tasty twists on some classic recipes - an old fashioned and a margarita. You'll notice that they are using our aged Oak Reserve whiskey in the margarita and our unaged Platinum in the Old Fashioned, the opposite of what is traditionally used. Just goes to show you how versatile our spirits are! Enjoy these recipes at home, or if you are visiting Disney World anytime soon, be sure to stop in at the beautiful Wilderness Lodge and tell them why you're there!

Charlie and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! We enjoyed a quiet day with our sons, nephews, and family. Asheville lent us a perfectly cool and sunny day for a family hike before we sat down to our roundtable Thanksgiving dinner. There's nothing better than all in good health and being with those you love. We're grateful for the opportunity to make good spirits and to bring good cheer to all of you!

Wow! What a month! October has been a very exciting time for us. Maybe it's the hints of cooler weather rolling in, but people really seem to be warming up to our spirits across the country. Troy and Charlie have been spending lots of time in Orlando at Epcot's International Wine & Food Festival. In addition to doing various tastings over the last few weeks in the Orlando area, Troy and Charlie are at the actual festival now. Last night they poured Moonlit Margaritas at the "Party for the Senses" feature party with over 1200 people in attendance (see pictures of the event here). We were told over and over that no one has ever had a table as busy as ours was at the festival! Troy and Charlie have been holding seminars about mixology and teaching others everything that we've learned over the years about pouring fine spirits. They'll also be stopping in to see some of our friends at venues like Todd English's Bluezoo, Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Hooch, The Ravenous Pig, Cask and Larder, and many others. The excitement of it all is really contagious!

Troy's been spending quite some time travelin around the Sunshine State lately, and she has had the amazing opportunity to work with the wonderful people at Whispering Canyon Cafe, located at Disney's beautiful Wilderness Lodge! Troy trained the cast members on how to pour and serve our Platinum moonshine, and now they are featuring a delicious moonshine margarita on their menu, which has turned out to be quite popular amongst the diners! And what an exciting setting to enjoy it in! Always smiles, laughter, and magic resounding through the lodge...don't blame the moonshine margarita if you get a bit dizzy looking up though!
